You're being sold to.

And you probably don't even realise.

There’s one truth that I’ve come to realise about persuasion.

And that’s that if you can’t persuade with words, you’re susceptible to those who can.

You’re being sold to…

By everyone.

  • The man on the street passing you a flier.

  • Your friend pitching you his favourite restaurant.

  • Your parents trying to convince you to not drink alcohol.

It’s part of life.

People want you to act in a way that benefits them.

And you do it to other people too.

Emotion is the biggest driver of action.

And sales is the ability to transfer emotion from yourself to another person.

It’s quite the superpower.

Wielded correctly, it can be a power for good.

For example, convincing an alcoholic to abstain.

But more often than not it’s a tool that’s misused to serve some personal aim.

And what’s worse is this:

If you don’t know how to sell yourself, it’s difficult to identify how and when you’re being sold to.

So many people are being manipulated every day, all the time, and they don’t even know it’s happening to them.

This is why, if you value your autonomy, it’s important for everyone to learn sales.

Without it you’re at risk of manipulation.

When I realised this, I dived down the rabbit-hole of sales philosophy to understand what persuasion is at its core.

Now, when I’m being sold to, I see it coming a mile away.

It puts the agency back in my hands.

I’ll be sharing more about what I’ve found soon.

Have a great weekend,

Sean
