The Fractal Thinking Framework (how to unlock unlimited motivation and productivity)
Here’s a question for you:
Why is it that most people set a goal to get in the gym each year but end up folding before the second week of February?
Let’s actually think about this for a second.
Is it due to difficulty?
Hardly.
Access?
Not at all. There’s a thousand gyms in every city.
So what’s the deal?
Everyone knows what they need to do.
Wake up.
Put on some clothes.
Drive to the gym.
Train until you can’t anymore.
Go home.
The difficulty comes in finding the motivation to do it day after day after day. The novelty wears away and you’re just left with the grind.
In order to stay on track through that period you need to really want it. And the truth is most people just don’t want it.
They think they do but they don’t.
If this sounds like it could be you (it certainly was for me), and you find yourself quitting at the 4-6 week mark every time, you’re in the right place.
You typically find two different types of temperaments:
Detail-focussed people who struggle to understand what they want in life.
Visionaries who know what they want but struggle to make it tangible.
Most people are wired one way or the other; it’s quite rare to be someone who can do both.
Fortunately, while you may be inclined towards one way, you can absolutely learn to adopt the opposite’s skill set.
Let’s look at how you can do that.
Vision - if you struggle to know what you want…
Lack of vision is the biggest cause of inconsistency.
How can you make progress towards a goal if you don’t know what you want?
If you don’t choose the destination, life will take you for a ride and one day you’ll find yourself in a place you had no intention of being in.
It’s like going to the airport without a destination, hopping on the first plane you see and ending up in Uganda.
If you have a destination for your two-week vacation, why don’t you have one for your life in general?
Start by imagining the life you want and creating real intention (we’ll go into detail in one of the following sections).
Fractal Thinking - If you struggle to realise your vision…
A lot of people have a vision in mind, they understand what they want, but they still fail to make it a reality.
This is because they don’t ground it in the tangible:
The monthly, weekly, and daily steps.
You will find success and progress when you align your vision with your monthly, weekly, and daily action.
Fractal Thinking:
What exists in the macro exists in the micro.
Fractal thinking is aligning your your desires, plans, and actions to accurately reflect the fractal reality of the universe (truth).
If you can declare what you desire from the world (macro vision), lay out a plan to achieve it (monthly plan), and make the necessary daily sacrifice towards achieving it (micro daily actions), and those aspects alignment with the truth that exists in reality, you will be rewarded with what you want.
It’s that simple.
I won’t go too metaphysical on you here as I want to keep this actionable but it’s important to keep this principle in mind as we move through the next steps.
Let’s get make it practical.
The Fractal Thinking Framework
1. Creating Your Vision
Imagine your perfect life.
What does it look like? What does it feel like?
Imagine where you’re living, who you’re with.
What do you do for work? What do people say about you? How much do you have in your bank account? What’s the first thing you do when you get home?
What does your home smell like? Imagine the scent and feel it in your nostrils.
Visualise the perfect day of your perfect life from start to finish, taking great care to imagine every little detail.
Do this now and feel the positive emotions pouring over you.
This is what you’re aiming for.
This is why you work hard every day. To achieve your vision.
What you’re imagining doesn’t exist in anyone else’s mind. It’s completely unique to you. Take ownership over it and be proud of what you are working towards.
Every time you visualise your perfect life and feel the associated emotions, you’re training your mind to subconsciously move your life in that direction.
Every time you practice this - the motivation will grow stronger.
Repeat it at least once per day after waking up.
2. Setting your goals
Now that you know what you want, you need a map to get there.
We do this first by setting The Main Goal for the next 6-12 months and 3-5 Atomic Goals for the next 30 days.
The Main Goal:
This is the one thing that will seriously move the needle in your life.
It could be a financial goal or a health goal or anything really. Make it the thing that would be transformative for you. Don’t be humble.
Make it measurable. Give it a number so you know when you’ve achieved it.
Atomic Goals:
Now that you have your main goal, we’re going to set 3-5 smaller ones for us to focus on each month to make sure we’re on the right track.
These are the building blocks towards The Main Goal.
For example, if my Main Goal is to make X$ /month in the next 6-12 months:
My goals for July could be:
500 followers on X
50 email subscribers
Fractal Vision Planner (digital product) launched
And my preliminary goals for August might be:
750 followers on X
100 email subscribers
Service offer launched
Do you see how the smaller goals directly lead into The Main Goal?
When you have your goals, it’s time to make a plan to achieve them.
3. Making an action plan (Action Hypothesis)
Once you have your Main Goal and your Atomic Goals for this month, we need a plan to get there.
Define exactly what you will have to do each day for the next 30 days in order to achieve your Atomic Goals and move closer towards the long-term vision.
These should be actions. Things you do.
In my case, my Action Hypothesis is that if I:
Sleep before 10:00PM every day
Workout 4 times /week
Post 3 times /day on X
Engage for 30 minutes /day
Send 5 DMs to new people /day
Walk over 10k steps /day
Read/learn for 45 minutes /day
Post a newsletter once /week
Then I will achieve my Atomic Goals.
To the best of my knowledge, this is true. It’s a prediction and something I can put my faith in.
I keep track of these actions daily using a simple habit tracker (DM me on X if you want the template).
I also schedule these actions into my calandar to make sure I do them and don’t have to think.
Once your Action Hypothesis is made, it’s time to take relentless action for 30 days of action.
Do not change your action plan and do not fall for any shiny objects. Make a commitment to yourself to do the work.
You will have the opportunity to think about if it’s working or not later. Not right now.
Now is the time for inputs.
It’s scheduled in your calendar, so just do it like a robot.
4. Review your progress
The worst thing you can do is try to think when you should be taking action or take action when you should be thinking.
Schedule time for both.
At the end of the 30 days of action, take 1-2 days to review your progress.
Did you do what you said you would do? If not, why not?
Did you achieve your Atomic Goals? If not, why not?
What one important thing did you learn from your experiment?
What are your next Atomic Goals for the next month?
What’s your next Action Hypothesis for the next month?
Once per quarter (every 90 days), it’s time to take 3-5 days to review your vision and The Main Goal.
Think big picture. Allow yourself to question absolutely everything. Nothing is sacred.
Take walks, read books, take time off from your 9-5 if possible.
Do you still want your vision? Is The Main Goal still important to you?
Are you on the right track? If not, why not?
Re-write your vision of your perfect life.
Re-write The Main Goal (if needed).
Create your Atomic goals for the next month.
Create your Action Hypothesis for the next month.
From here you’ll be in a much stronger position.
The Power of The Fractal Thinking Framework
The key to consistent action is a strong “why” supporting your vision and alignment across your vision, goals, and actions.
Once you’ve mapped out the path to your goal, take relentless action and don’t question your approach until it’s time for your monthly or quarterly review.
Use monthly and quarterly reviews as thinking time to adapt and pivot your strategy when necessary and prepare for another 30 days of consistent action.
Vision (5-10 years)
Main goal (6-12 months)
Atomic goals (monthly)
Action plan (daily/weekly)
Progress review (Monthly and Quarterly)
If you follow this framework, not only will your productivity increase, but your chance of quitting will drop to zero because you’re constantly aware of the purpose behind every action and how it will lead to your dream life.
You’ve achieved alignment, and with that, secured your future.
If you found this interesting, DM me on X and let me know about it (I’d love to hear what you have to say).
